At the ends of the earth, there was a god. A god that constantly emitted a burning hot sound image. What once was the deep depths of darkness had been transformed into purgatory, eternally aflame after the god's arrival. In the world of that purgatory, waves of sound shook the hearts and resonated in the very existence of the people.
Such was God's will.
God determined the world's value. But, seeking further innovation, he sought the conflict and fusion of differing value systems. The powerless would turn to ash in an instant. Only the strong could keep standing on the stage of purgatory...
...And so tonight, a man would appear to challenge God. A man with golden hair, clad in darkest black...who defies fate, haunted by a spectral skeleton.
There was a powerful will in his eyes that would slay even gods to put an end to his cursed fate.
...And yet.
"This man will not reach the future for eternity. There is nothing to fear any longer."
"I shall burn your future to nothing with my own hands."
Long ago, in an era when gods still lived in the world of humans...
The gods gave humans the land, the sea, and the world. The humans accepted them, giving thanks back to the gods every day... This was the perfect relationship between gods and man.
However, one day, a god of thunder and five earthly assassins disrupted that order. The god of thunder dominated the masses with might and took them captive. The assassins questioned the purpose of following the gods, encouraging the masses to revolt. It was an invasion, but it was just what the times called for.
Then, the time came. Humans began to harbor doubts about praying to the gods. The gods despaired that no one prayed to them, and began to leave the land.
God and man began to consider how to live in separate worlds.
A man called Ozzy appeared. To speak of the gods, it is unavoidable to speak of Ozzy. Therefore, tell I must...
He was a prophet and a sage.
Some of the gods still remained on the earth. However, it would only be a matter of time before those gods left as well.
Ozzy persuaded the gods. He spoke three simple things. But his power was great, as if he were shouting. The remaining gods were deeply moved.
"Gods must not control the people, but watch over them."
"Through human responsibility, people become free."
"Even fools can take pride in a claim given form."
Even after seeing the state of mankind, it was not too late to leave. Thus was the gods' departure postponed.
The gods resolved to remain on the earth. They idled their days away simply watching over humanity.
However... Ozzy's words dwelled in their hearts. Were they truth or falsehood? Until they could make certain, they could not leave the humans' land.
Thus, to humanity, this was the ideal form of a relationship with the gods.
No praying, no speaking—but the gods were at their side. That feeling became gratitude to the gods, and soon led to one enormous festival. Ozzy called this festival "Genesis of Destiny," or "G.O.D" for short.
All the peoples of the earth gathered for a festival on a scale like never before. It was a festival to give thanks to the gods, as well as to mark humanity's independence from them.
God and man alike were caught up in the same surge of enthusiasm. In that instant, that brief moment in time, the boundaries between god and man all but ceased to exist.
Amid the surge, Ozzy became aware of the very reason he lived. He was born to hold this festival.
...However, the party would one day come to an end. The gods saw mankind's freedom, their claim, and left the earth.
The sage Ozzy watched the gods go with a peaceful expression. He brimmed with satisfaction at the festival's success.
The festival was over. The gods went away, leaving only humans on the earth.
But Ozzy was certain: that festival, "G.O.D," had changed mankind. In this godless land, humans lived free and independent.
Alas, contrary to Ozzy's hope, humans began to judge other humans and restrict their freedoms.
All the while, conflict continued on the underside of the world, and on its face, someone was deceiving others.
The gods will not save mankind. Freedom was a mere word, and harmony only a pretense. The festival was no more than a means to disguise reality. Thus were the masses taken in.
Ozzy, however, did not believe it. The gods truly were at that festival. The people reveled in that excitement together with them. The gods did not respond unless asked. That was all.
Ozzy took up his sword—not to join the conflict on the underside, but to fight in the public sphere. To cut down evil with his blade.
Ozzy's solitary battle began. He would bring the festival back to the world again. How was he to manifest his ideals...?
That was when Ozzy realized. Humans must change their mindset once more. Yes—he would guide them with his own power and bring revolution. Ozzy's ideals deeply moved the conflict-worn people. He spread his ideology and began to guide them.
However, his deeds incurred the wrath of the gods.
"Through human responsibility, people become free."
Ozzy had told the gods that himself, yet he was controlling people and restricting their freedom with his own hands.
The gods' wrath became a cataclysm. The sky burst, the sea surged, and the earth split.
Yet Ozzy resolutely faced this catalysm. With the strength of his will, he could even cut through the sea with the electric heat of his sword. With the people's passionate voices at his back, he pushed onward.
Thus Ozzy reached the gods.
The gods spoke to Ozzy when he finally reached them.
That blade of electric heat in your hand—even if you use it to cut apart the land and tear through the sea, nothing will change. Humans cannot be free nor claim to be proud. Why do you alone resist?
Ozzy argued back.
No, humans can show freedom and pride. Was that not proven at the festival? That is why, when this cataclysm occurred, I charged my sword with heat and conquered that hardship. Together with humanity.
The gods spoke, Then look behind you.
Indeed. There was no one to be seen behind Ozzy. Not a single person had followed him...
Ozzy sank into the depths of despair. He was no longer a prophet or a sage. He was nothing more than a man left behind by the times...
Ozzy despaired. The electric heat of his sword vanished along with his purpose.
He calmly reexamined himself. His ideal of god and man joining hands truly did exist at that festival. And yet, all the humans but himself had forgotten that. There was no one to sympathize with him. Yes, if he could not escape from that festival, it was all over for him...
...No, not quite.
If he could not change the world as a human... There was but one thing to do.
Then...
Ozzy's sword began to emit electric heat once again, to challenge the gods.
Yes. I myself must become a god.
Ozzy took up his sword once more, but he fell into darkness. Deeper, and deeper still. The darkness went on forever.
Was this what came of challenging the gods? Ozzy couldn't help but laugh.
At last, Ozzy reached the end of the darkness. He had arrived at the depths of the earth. If this was the place called hell, he could be content. From now on, I...
There were neither gods nor demons in the frigid depths of the earth. What was there was endless darkness. And yet Ozzy did not despair. His sword gleamed with even more electric heat.
I will not be swallowed by the darkness. I will revolutionize the earth from this world of despair.
In the depths of the darkness, Ozzy lost his name. There was no light here. It was very like the human world of today. However... If the flame of that festival could set the darkness ablaze...
From time to time, humans visited the depths of the earth. They were drawn in by the reverberation of his electric-hot sword. They wanted to peer into the abyss at the bottom of that darkness.
He challenged them to battle. To make his sword blaze brighter still. To light a fire in that darkness. To hold that festival once more.
Time passed, and the silent hell became a purgatory of sweltering heat. With his sword and his vitality, the man whose power shook the gods' very souls had at last lit a fire in hell.
And in that place, the man who was once Ozzy became a god. That god defied countless challenges, relentlessly burning away people's futures in the flames of purgatory.
It was hardly long before that god became the figure of humans' terror. Thus, for those who were once like him, who lived to express themselves in this world, he became an obstacle to surpass.
Even today, the former man called Ozzy accepts challenges from the people in his purgatory. He could no longer remember his own name. However, he had attained a suitable name. And so he declared to challengers thus:
My name is G.O.D. I am the supreme ruler of purgatory. I am he who burns away the futures of man.
The term 覇者, translated here as "supreme ruler," can also mean "champion," in line with the Label's fighting game theme.
Ozzy is likely named after legendary metal vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.
