Magellan Magellan is an alien girl who lives in the Magellanic Clouds. Magellan aliens have strange tactile antennas on their heads, and they usually carry mysterious ray guns, but their appearance isn’t much different from humans.
Magellan aliens are also incredibly friendly. Using their advanced technology, they build spaceships to travel to other planets and study abroad—working to promote interplanetary exchange.
“Magellan Magellan”... On Earth, she goes by “Ohashi Ginko”, and she is one such Magellan. She’s 2115 years old—about 15 or 16 in Earthling years. It’s about time for her to start high school, and the one that she chose is on Earth.
It was a prestigious prep school, and she had a “special reason” for wanting to get in at all costs…
“Wh–! Wh–! …Huh, I, I didn’t get iiiiin!?”
…It seems that she wasn’t accepted by the prestigious institution.
Magellan’s reason for wanting to attend school on Earth wasn’t something grand like, “I want to save my home planet” or “I’m chasing after my nemesis.” But to her, it was the most important reason in the universe.
The reason she decided to leave her home planet in the Magellanic Clouds and attend high school on Earth, a remote planet so far away… was “love.”
Magellan’s target of affection— “Ferdinand Dorado.” He’s a young man a grade above Magellan. He’s handsome, good at both academics and sports, intelligent and brave… That’s the perfect way to describe him. Despite his incredible talent, he never brags. Ferdinand was truly Adonis, refreshing like a spring breeze.
Any girl would want a prince from a fairytale, and Magellan was one of them. However, when Ferdinand went to that prestigious school on Earth in pursuit of his dream of becoming a “cosmos diplomat”, many girls gave up on their crushes.
Only one girl remained determined enough to follow Ferdinand… Magellan.
“Please wait for me, Ferdie… Your sweet Magellan will be by your side now!”
…Let’s make it clear here that Magellan and Ferdinand aren’t exactly close friends. In fact, they’ve never exchanged a single word. Despite this, she has come so far. Fearsome willpower and delusional thinking are what drive Magellan’s strength.
Even though she had followed in her beloved Ferdinand’s footsteps and applied to a high school on Earth… The result of the entrance exam, to her surprise, was a failure. The only school she was able to get into was for general education.
“I can’t believe it…”
Magellan was usually carefree, but now it seemed like she was depressed. However, she made a quick decision.
“So be it! I have no choice but to transfer to the school where Ferdinand goes~! I just have to get good grades on those tests!”
But Ferdinand’s school was top notch. If Magellan didn’t get good grades on her upcoming tests, there was no way she would be able to transfer.
But Magellan had no concept of “studying”, and she hated “making an effort”. In preparation for the test, she copied the entire textbook on her arms, body, and desk. She would be cheating.
Magellan failed at cheating. Unsurprisingly, her test results were a disaster.
But Magellan had no intention of “giving up” or “retreating”. She was going to transfer to the school where her beloved Ferdinand was. That was the decision she had already made.
At his wits end, Magellan’s homeroom teacher admonishes her—clasping his head in his hands.
“Ohashi… I’m sorry to say this, but it’s going to be impossible to get into a school that prestigious with grades like yours. You should give it up.”
“So the probability of transferring is zero percent?”
“I wouldn’t say zero, but…”
“Oh!! If there’s even a one percent chance, it’s worth a shot~ One way or another, the love between Ferdinand and I is going to work out~”
Magellan had a strangely confident smile on her face.
“No! It’s not zero percent, but with your current academic ability it just isn’t possible! You have to study properly first…” The teacher quickly added. He desperately tries to dissuade Magellan, but she doesn’t seem to understand at all.
“Why are you being so mean? You must not be a teacher, but an evil alien from planet M33!?”
…In the end, Magellan took out her prized ray gun and was about to fire away at the teacher with the Magellan Stream—but a teacher from another class heard the commotion and restrained her.
Midterms were a disaster. Magellan absolutely had to get a good score on the upcoming mock exam!
However, even now, she still thought that the results of her midterm were probably “just a malfunction” of the grading machine.
“Hey, Ginko? Why don’t you just try studying? Just this once.” Her classmates sighed.
And so, Magellan had no choice but to study properly for the first time in her life.
“Hmm. I should see what the test covers first… Ugh!”
Magellan fell asleep three seconds after opening her textbook. Her forehead slammed hard against the desk, and she woke up spitting out curses and moaning in pain.
“D-Damn… Is this an attack from the M33 aliens~?”
Magellan looked around the room to make sure there were no enemies nearby, then tilted her head.
“Um… I guess I’ll take a break~!”
After that, Magellan succumbed to numerous temptations such as "dozing off," "manga," "television," and "games," and each time she blamed evil aliens.
And in the end…
"...Okay! I give up! Studying isn't for me!"
Magellan had completely given up on studying for the test.
The day of the mock exam finally arrived.
Magellan, who hadn't studied for the test at all, had a secret plan to take on the "mid-boss" that was the mock exam. It was to utilize the scientific technology of the Magellanic Clouds to develop a pencil that, when rolled, has a 50/50 chance of revealing the answer.
We should make it clear here that this doesn't mean that Magellan had a talent for inventing. For a Magellan, inventing something like this is as easy as tying shoelaces. But the good natured Magellan simply didn't think to use their prized scientific knowledge on such a trivial thing.
...It was a stupid plan, it was still a plan. Magellan began to roll the pencil around with confidence.
(Hehe♪ This’ll be a piece of cake! Bang! Bang!)
Magellan was happily rolling her pencil, but…
"Hey! Ohashi! Take this seriously! You won't pass the transfer exam like this!"
Assuming she was “playing” the teacher delivered a death blow by taking away her pencil. But Magellan doesn’t give up—or understand.
(I-I see! The teacher is right! The sound of the pencil rolling around is too loud, and it’s only good for multiple choice questions!)
Misunderstanding her teacher’s words, Magellan decided she would develop more items to test.
The day of the fateful exam… Magellan’s greatest enemy.
(Heh… Heh… Heh… I’ve been waiting for this~)
Magellan had dark circles under her eyes and a creepy smile. She had been working overnight for the past few days.
Not to study for the exam, of course. She had been working to invent an item for the real exam, making use of her experience from the mock test.
And so…
(Ta-da! "See-through glasses"! Anything scanned with these glasses reveals its true nature... Look at the test question and the answer will automatically appear!)
Even for a Magellan, it was a difficult invention to make. For the first time in her life, Magellan had made an effort… Just in the completely wrong direction.
And thus, Magellan not only passed the transfer exam, but she also became the first student in history to achieve a perfect score. She had finally earned the right to transfer to the prestigious prep school her beloved was attending.
The final boss finally makes an appearance… The interview to transfer to Ferdinand’s school.
"Ms. Ohashi, you’ve achieved unprecedented success... I heard that you achieved the great feat of scoring 100 points in all subjects on the transfer exam. With such amazing results, what kind of ambitions do you have that make you want to apply to our school?"
The interviewer, unaware of Magellan's fraud, met her with a big smile, thinking that the most brilliant child in the school's history would be transferring there.
However, Magellan, who was not concerned with the interviewer, answered enthusiastically.
“I'm transferring because of my beloved~ I'm going to have a lovey-dovey, kissy school life with Ferdie here~! Hehe~!"
The interviewer was dumbfounded by the sight of Magellan writhing with a careless smile on her face. She was completely lost in her delusion.
But then, as if he suddenly understood something, the interviewer nodded his head up and down.
“Ah... I see. Well, I don't really understand, but... I guess ordinary people can't understand the thoughts of geniuses.”
And so, Magellan successfully transferred to the prestigious school where her dearest Ferdinand was.
Magellan, having transferred to the prestigious school, rushed into her beloved’s class before going to her own.
“Ferdie! Your Magel… Ginko has come!”
Finally, Magellan’s fantasy was about to come true.
…But that didn’t happen.
Right next to her beloved was a smiling bewitching female student. Magellan brakes, and Ferdinand looked at her with a glazed look in his eyes.
“Who are you? How do you know my name? Don't get in our way... Can you please leave?"
To add insult to injury, Ferdie and the female student passionately kissed in front of everyone!
(Whaaaaaaaaaaat?! Wh–?! Wh–?! Why did you kiss a girl like that?!)
The voices of their classmates echoed around Magellan's head.
"Ferdinand... You've changed a lot since you started going out with that girl."
(Huh…!? No way!)
Magellan scans Ferdinand’s girlfriend with the “see-through glasses'' she kept on her forehead. Then… the girl’s charming smile disappeared like smoke—her image changing to an alien with a grotesque appearance. Just to be sure, she checks her neck... and there is a heart-shaped birthmark, the telltale sign of an evil M33 alien!
(Ah, that's it! There's no doubt about it! An M33 alien! What are you doing to my beloved?!)
Magellan's small fists shook violently.
Magellan summons the evil M33 alien, disguised as an Earthling and manipulating Ferdinand, to the school at night.
“What are you calling me out so late for? The hell do you want?”
“How shameless. I see right through you! Show yourself, evil alien! M33 alien!”
“...!? How do you know who I am!? D-Damn it! I was going to use that talented young Ferdinand to invade Earth!"
The M33 aliens are evil aliens with an instinct to invade others. “What's yours is yours. What's someone else's is yours" is an absolute rule engraved in their DNA.
The evil M33 aliens and the good natured Magellan aliens (Magellan being an exception) were destined to be enemies, and they had a long history of fighting.
And now, a new battle begins on the far off planet Earth! At first, the M33 alien had the upper hand. But even if peace on Earth was of no concern, Magellan couldn't lose when her beloved Ferdinand’s heart was at stake!
"...Take that! Magellanic Stream! Bang bang bang bang bang bang!"
"You... that's stupid! Aaah– ah– ah–!"
The M33 alien was destroyed by Magellan's ray gun, and so Ferdinand’s love (and, incidentally, peace on Earth) were saved.
The evil M33 alien was defeated, so Ferdinand’s brainwashing should have been undone… The next morning, Magellan decided to ambush him in front of the school gates to confirm. Ferdinand came dashing to school, and Magellan could clearly see him from afar.
(Aah… Ferdie is truly wonderful.)
As Ferdinand gets closer, Magellan's heart beats faster and faster. And then… the moment when they pass each other.
(Ah! F-Ferdie! You just looked at me and smiled!?)
Ferdinand’s smile was not the hollow one from yesterday, but a refreshing one—like a spring breeze. Seeing that, Magellan was convinced that his brainwashing had been broken and that his feelings were genuine.
(Ah, wow! Such a passionate gaze…! Ferdie and I are connected by a red light beam after all~! We're so in love~!)
…Magellan, writhing as her face steamed up, had no idea that Ferdinand’s passionate gaze was directed at the school madonna standing right behind her.
But that is what it is.
And so, the Earth is at peace for today.
カジキ (Kajiki) refers to blue marlin. Kajikia is also a genus of billfishes, including the white marlin. If you have read Magellan's stories using MTL previously, this name may have been translated as "Marlin" or just appear as "the swordfish". カジキ (Kajiki) is also the name used for the constellation Dorado, located within the Large Magellanic Cloud. In Japan the constellation is represented by a swordfish instead of a dorado, so a completely different name is used instead of a translation of the word dorado.
Magellan refers to Ferdinand using "senpai". Because this is a comedy love story, I elected to leave this off in localization and instead used English terms of endearment, and the nickname "Ferdie".
Both Magellan and Ferdinand are a reference to Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan.
